Self-esteem and Confidence
Do you feel like your sense of worth and your self-confidence has evaporated? Do you have a longing to be more confident, to feel able to do the things you want to do? Do you feel a lack of motivation and find yourself wondering what happened?
Setbacks, perceived failure, self-criticism, and criticism from others can all impact our feeling of confidence and self-esteem over time.
What is Self-Esteem?
Self-esteem refers to our overall subjective sense of personal worth or value. Self-esteem could be defined as how much we appreciate and like ourselves regardless of the circumstances. Our self-esteem can be defined by several factors including:
- Self-confidence
- Feeling of security
- Identity
- Sense of belonging
- Feeling of competence
Self-esteem is generally considered to be lower in childhood, rising through adolescence and into adulthood, where it eventually stabilises.
Self-esteem impacts our decision-making process, relationships, emotional health, and general well-being. It also influences motivation – if we have a positive self-view, we are more likely to know our potential and take on new challenges.
People with healthy self-esteem tend to:
- Have a firm understanding of their skills
- Are able to maintain healthy relationships with others
- Have realistic expectations of themselves and their abilities
- Understand their needs and can express them appropriately
When our self-esteem is low, we feel less sure of our abilities and can doubt our own decision-making. As a result, we are less likely to be motivated to try new things and might have issues with relationships. We are also likely to struggle with expressing our needs. Our confidence may also be low, and we might feel unlovable and unworthy.
